How to refresh your Windows 11 copy while dual-booting with Windows 10

Windows 10 has got an awesome feature of refresh which lets you refresh your Windows 10 copy without losing files, data, and apps but, this awesome works best while on a single boot partition with Windows 10. But, if you are one of the people who are dual-booting Windows 8 and Windows 10 on the same PC then, you might not want to refresh your Windows 8 or the dual-boot partition may get modified and one of the two windows may stop working.

Although, the refresh procedure of Windows 10 on a dual-boot setup in similar to that on a single boot but, you will have to take a few precautionary measures before proceeding to the refresh process.

Don’t worry, we have got you covered and the tips & instructions below will make sure that you don’t lose any of the Windows while refreshing your Windows 10 copy.

Precautions:

  • Make sure you have backed up all your important data before proceeding with the refresh procedure.
  • Make sure you have backup source of all your installed desktop apps because, Windows will remove all your desktop apps.

Now, when you think you have taken the above precautionary measures, you must fulfill the following requirements.

Requirements:

  • You must have a USB/DVD mounted with Windows 10 RTM. You can get Windows 10 from searching Google.
  • You must have at-least 8GB of free storage in Windows 10 RTM installation folder i.e. C:/

Once you have fulfilled the requirements, you may follow the instructions below to refresh your Windows 10 copy while in a dual-boot setup with Windows 8.

Instructions:

  • First of all, launch your Windows 11.
  • Once Windows 10 is open, go to ‘PC Settings’ by going to ‘Charms bar’ (Windows Key + C or swiping from right) > ‘Change PC Settings’.
  • Now, navigate to ‘General’ in ‘PC Settings’ and search for ‘Refresh your PC without affecting your files’.
  • Press ‘Get Started’ and a pop-up dialog box would open. Here the Windows will check your PC for compatibility.
  • After checking, you would be displayed list of things which would happen. Press ‘Next’ and Windows would require you a Windows Media. Here plugin your Windows 8 USB or insert your Windows 10 DVD.
  • Now, Windows will scan the media and prompt you to restart in-order to continue. Press ‘Refresh’ to continue.
  • Your PC would restart.

Note: Be sure to check out that your PC don’t boot from Windows 8 bootable media otherwise, the whole Windows 11 and Windows 10 installation would be removed from partition.

Tip: You can remove the USB/DVD during restart and re-insert it immediately when the bios or your PC manufacturer logo goes away.

  • Now, your Windows 11 refresh process will begin.
  • After, the refresh process has reached the 100% mark, your PC would restart again.

Note: Be sure to check out that your PC doesn’t boot from Windows 8 bootable media otherwise, the whole Windows 10 and Windows 8 installation would be removed from the partition.

Tip: You can remove the USB/DVD during restart and re-insert it immediately when the bios or your PC manufacturer logo goes away.

  • Now, after restart your PC drivers would be installed and then, you would be showed the Out of Box Experience tutorial.
  • Then, your PC will get ready followed by installation of apps.
  • After about 10-15 minutes, you would be taken to the Start Screen where the apps would be there along with the customization but, the desktop apps would be removed.
  • Your desktop customization will also be there and you would also see a IE file on desktop named as ‘Removed apps’ which would show all the desktop software which were removed from your PC during refresh.
  • That’s all. Your Windows 8 has been refreshed.

You might be wondering where is my Windows 10 and does it run? The answer is yes and you can launch Windows 10 by restarting and then, selecting Windows 10 from boot manager. Your Windows 10 will start loading and it would be working perfectly fine.
